More about The TRR Bookshop
The TRR Bookshop is a small, ever-changing collection of children's books we think are worth finding. We look for Afrikaans children's books, South African stories, local-language books, inclusive and diverse books, as well as unusual titles that can be difficult or expensive to find.
Unlike a traditional bookshop, we don't try to stock everything. Some books are here because they're particularly useful, some because representation matters, and others because we've stumbled across an unusually good price or a title we rarely see available. Sometimes we find a stack. Sometimes there's only one.
What kinds of children's books can I find here?
The collection changes depending on what we find. You may see Afrikaans books, South African children's books, books in local languages, inclusive and diverse stories, books about disability and different families, as well as books that support children through feelings, development and everyday experiences.
Why are some books only available in small quantities?
Many of our Bookshop titles are finds rather than books we order in large quantities. We might discover a few copies on sale, come across a difficult-to-find edition or find just one copy of a book we've been looking for.
When those copies are gone, we may not be able to replace them straight away, but we'll keep looking.
Are the books new or pre-owned?
Both. Most books will clearly state whether they are new or pre-owned, and pre-owned books will include information about their condition. Where we photograph an individual copy, we'll also tell you when the photos show the actual book you'll receive.
Why does The Resource Roost sell books?
Books have always been an important part of The Resource Roost. We regularly find stories that help children understand themselves, learn about other people, navigate new experiences or simply see more of their own world represented on the page.
The TRR Bookshop lets us go one step further. When we find a book we really want to share, we can sometimes bring it home to the Roost so you can buy it directly from us.
Do you sell Afrikaans children's books?
Yes. Finding good Afrikaans children's books is one of the reasons The TRR Bookshop exists. We look for Afrikaans picture books, board books, translated favourites and South African stories, including titles that aren't always easy to find online.
We also look out for children's books in other South African languages when we find them.
Do you stock inclusive and diverse children's books?
Yes. We actively look for books that reflect different children, families, bodies, abilities and experiences. Sometimes these books directly explore a particular topic, while others simply include diverse characters as part of an everyday story.
We think both matter.
How do you choose books for The TRR Bookshop?
There isn't a fixed checklist. A book might make it onto our shelf because it's local, useful, inclusive, hard to find, unusually well priced, or simply something we think more families should know exists.
Every book has a reason for being here, and we'll tell you what that reason is on its product page.
Are these books available elsewhere?
Sometimes. The TRR Bookshop isn't about claiming exclusivity where there isn't any. We may stock a book because we've found it at a particularly good price, because we've already done the hunting for you, or because it's difficult to find consistently.
Where a book is widely available elsewhere, we'll still only bring it into the Bookshop when we think there's a good reason to.
Will sold-out books come back?
Sometimes, but we can't promise it. Because many Bookshop titles are found in small quantities, we don't always know when we'll see another copy.
When they're gone, they're sometimes really gone. But we'll keep looking.
