Why Is There Racism? (Paperback)

Why Is There Racism? (Paperback)

Because “everyone is equal” isn’t quite enough information when children start noticing racism. This gives adults some actual language for explaining what it is, how it can show up and what children can do when they encounter it.

A little more about this book

Starting from the principle that everyone deserves equal treatment, the book explains racism through examples ranging from unkind words in the playground to discrimination in the wider world. It also looks at ways children can support others and help people feel included. Notes for parents and teachers provide additional prompts for discussion.

Helpful when

Children begin asking about race, skin colour, racism, unfair treatment or something they’ve seen or heard at school, in their community or in the media.

How to use at home

Don’t feel you need to finish the whole book in one sitting. Stop when your child has a question, answer what they’re actually asking, and come back to it. The grown-up notes can help when you’re not quite sure how to phrase something.

Recommended age

Early primary (6-8 years) and Growing readers & learners (8+ years)

How we found it

A practical book for a conversation adults often know they should be having but aren’t always sure how to start. Very much a Resource Roost kind of find.
