Butterfly Heart is an Afrikaans picture book about friendship, grief and healing. It follows Neo and Mosa, two best friends who share a special connection through heart-shaped stones. When Mosa becomes ill and her heart grows weaker, Neo begins to face the pain of losing someone she loves.

Through simple, lyrical storytelling, the book opens a gentle space for children and adults to talk about death, memory, love and the different ways we carry people with us after they are gone.

How to use at home

Read this one slowly, with space for pauses. You do not need to explain everything at once. Let your child notice the friendship, the heart-shaped stones and the butterflies, then gently ask what they think Neo might be feeling. This can become a quiet way to talk about missing someone, remembering them, and finding small signs of comfort in everyday life.
