The birthday gifts I've bookmarked (and why)

Built on possibility, optimism, and an alarming number of saved tabs.

Written by Amber, co-founder of The Resource Roost

I love open-ended play, natural curiosity and letting children be bored.

I also love drinking my wine while it’s still at the temperature the winemaker intended.

Turns out, both can be true.

So, for this holiday, I’m not just packing the usual favourites and hoping for the best.

I’m stacking the odds in my favour.

A few things Emmett hasn’t seen in a while.

A few things he’s never seen at all.

More craft supplies than we’ll probably need.

And, yes, the iPad.

Here’s what’s actually coming with us.

Gifts that help children understand themselves

Some of the gifts I've found myself saving over and over again are the ones that help children make sense of big feelings, new experiences, and the world around them.

Gifts that help children understand other people

One of the things I look for when choosing a gift is whether it opens the door to conversations. Not forced conversations, but natural ones that happen through stories and play.

Not just tractors and dinosaurs

And listen, we love a tractor. Emmett would personally like to confirm that dinosaurs, diggers and trains are all excellent.

But boys deserve the full range too.

Tender books. Feelings resources. Dolls. Caregiving play. Stories that help them understand themselves and other people.

One of my strongest parenting beliefs is that caring for others isn’t a girl skill. It’s a life skill.

So yes to the tractors.
And yes to the tenderness too.

The phrase “educational toy” has always bothered me a little, mostly because it suggests children aren’t learning when they’re simply playing.

And if Montessori has taught me anything, it’s that play is rarely just play.

It’s how children process, practise, test, repeat and make sense of the world.

We are very much reaping the rewards of raising a very independent, very curious Emmett.

Occasionally inconvenient? Absolutely.

Would we have it any other way? Not for a second.

So these gifts are here because they made me pause. Because they feel thoughtful. And because, when our first party invitation eventually arrives, I’d like to bring something that says, “I saw this, and I thought of you.”
