About this resource

Build-a-Spud is a free Roost Original, created as a simple introduction to how Roost resources are designed and used.

Children build their own spud character using interchangeable body parts and accessories, with no fixed outcome or correct result. The activity encourages creativity, body awareness, and shared interaction without pressure to follow instructions or complete a task “correctly”.

This resource is often shared as a first activity in therapy sessions or at home, helping adults see how play, language, and connection can unfold naturally when expectations are kept light.

Suggested age range

2–6 years

A flexible starting point for open-ended play, body awareness, and shared interaction.

Why:

  • 2–3 free play
  • 4–6 structured variation

Why two spud bases are included

This resource includes two versions of the spud to support different starting points:

  • Free play spud
Designed for creativity and exploration. There is no right or wrong way to build.
  • Guided spud
Includes light visual guidelines to support children who benefit from extra structure when getting started.

Adults can choose the version that best suits the child, or move between them over time.

Why this resource works

Build-a-Spud is intentionally simple. That simplicity allows adults to focus on interaction rather than instruction.

The activity supports:

  • Open-ended play without fixed outcomes
  • Body part awareness and early vocabulary
  • Turn-taking and shared attention
  • Confidence through choice and creativity

The goal is not the finished spud, but the conversation and connection that happens along the way.

How it’s used
  • As a first Roost activity in therapy or at home
  • During free play or short, low-pressure interactions
  • One-on-one or alongside siblings or peers
  • Repeated often, with different language each time

There is no single correct way to use this resource. It is designed to adapt to the child.
